Was it the onions on your cheese-steak sandwich that kept you up all night with searing heartburn? Or was it the 30 grams of greasy fat piled on that mayonnaise-sodden bun, and the fact that you wolfed it down 20 minutes before bedtime? Yes, sometimes a particular food truly is the culprit, but many times it's the way we go about eating that really causes our digestive discomfort. Before you pin your GI woes on a certain food, make sure that your eating habits aren't the real problem.

People often mistake the painful consequences of poor habits for a problem with a specific food. The truth is, the number one problem with food is toomuchfood — especially too muchfattyfood. While food intolerance, food allergies, and food-related disorders do exist, many people are able to avoid discomfort simply by changing their habits rather than eliminating foods — and the vital nutrients they may contain —from their diets.

So you need not avoid those heart-healthy, antioxidant-rich onions on that sandwich — it's probably a wiser choice to cut back on the fat-filled cheese, steak, and mayonnaise. If you make an effort to cut back on high-fat foods and stop late-night snacking (especially if you suffer from frequent heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease), you just might see a big decrease in the severity of your indigestion.
